We're in this together

My name is LaSharon Jones-Whitehead. I was born and raised on the Northside of Chicago near Cabrini Green. I graduated from Lincoln Park High School and was one of the top basketball players within the district. Going to the WNBA was my dream, but there was a greater purpose set before me. I didn’t know and understand what that purpose was at the time, but I decided to take that journey and find out the purpose that I was meant to fulfil.

Prior to pursuing a transitional career path in working with older adults, I was a Youth and Family Director at the YMCA for 5 years. I am both passionate about working with youth and older adults. Merging both creates opportunities in bridging the gap and provides intergenerational needs within our communities.

Currently I am an Alzheimer’s researcher at Rush Hospital. I am a recent graduate of Concordia University of Chicago with a Masters in Gerontology. I am currently pursuing a second Masters at Concordia University of Chicago majoring in Grant writing, Management, and Evaluations.

Martin Luther King once said “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” Courageous people are those who leave a place of personal comfort and intentionally choose to step into a place of conflict on behalf of others. That is what I intend to do. I intend to exemplify and show others the power of venturing out of complacency and meeting the purpose we were meant to fulfill.
